Edition's theme

Edition's theme: Security and the Information Society

The theme for the 2008/09 edition of the MAP-i doctoral program, Security and the Information Society, reflects many concerns which presently influence the role of Information Technology in society. The dependency on IT of crucial aspects of human activity, suggests a strong scientific and technological investment on security methodologies. On the other hand, since security must guarantee fundamental rights and not coerce its use, a well-balanced and fair society requires a careful judgement on the limitations of such methodologies.

Thus, the MAP-i doctoral program felt a need to encourage on its students a comprehensive view of the security issue in TI. Although the emphasis is scientific and technological, since this is the general framework of the program, social responsibility aspects must be included in its aims.
